Flying is required for first-years only, optional for older students.
Compulsory subjects for the first five years:
Transfiguration, Defence Against the Dark Arts, Charms, Potions, Astronomy, History of Magic, and Herbology
At the end of their second year, students are required to add at least two optional subjects from the list to their syllabus for the start of the third year:
Arithmancy, Study of Ancient Runes, Divination, Care of Magical Creatures, Muggle Studies, Art/Muggle Art, Magical Theory, Muggle Music
Magical Home Economics is an elective and is taught to students fifth year and above
Sixth and seventh year students can also pick more elective subjects: Advanced Arithmancy Studies, Alchemy, Ancient Studies, Apparition, Ghoul Studies

- barely passed his OWL and considered quitting the subject after 5th year, but perseveres because the professor is nice, and he still has an interest in it, even though it's hard for him to master;
- he loves protective and prophecy runes the most;
- he studies the best by coming up with stories related to a rune's meaning and shape, but this approach takes a lot of time he is not always ready to spare;
- he has less trouble explaining the theory than other subjects he is more used to feeling the vibes of (like Charms or Transfiguration)

It's a fun subject. It's always interesting to learn and study new scripture. There is power in language.

She started studying runes for superficial reasons: because they were pretty, and because they could be used for secret communication. She has since discovered other uses for them, particularly in crafting magical items, as well as divination.

Atlas's favourite way to approach Runes is in their functionality as magical seals. As a bit of a linguist, he has no trouble picking up on new ones, or their meanings and translation either.
